ZF Plugins Tutorial on DevZone

Nice article, but somehow in the cache plugin '$this->getCache()' results in error - where is getCache()?

You'll have to implement it yourself. I purposely did not implement it in the example, as you'll want to specify your own cache options and setup. The only requirement is that getCache() should return a Zend_Cache_Frontend.
